The ever reliable Toyota Hilux Workmate defeinately lives up to the title of “Work Mate.” After multiple years of production, the single cab variant of the Hilux has become tradies go-to utility vehicle and its not hard to see why. We were lucky enough to deliver this sharp looking ute to one of our clients just last week and here is a few of our thoughts.

The Toyota HiLux Workmate 4×2 single-cab/chassis has a maximum payload of 1240kg, and while its braked towing limit is 2500kg – this still comes in about a tonne lower than the top in catagory utes.

The model we looked at was the 4×2 HiLux Workmate single-cab with factory alloy drop-side tray, powered by the 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel. The engine is good for a claimed 110kW and 343Nm, with the urge delivered to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

This is about as basic as a Utility vehicle can come, starting with 16-inch steel wheels with 215/65R16C light truck tyres and a full-size spare. Inside there’s vinyl floors and basic cloth-trim seats, with no rake adjustment for the base cushion, no lumbar adjustment in the backrest and limited reclining room.

However, it does have features designed to make a hard day’s work easier, like power windows and door mirrors, manual air-con, remote keyless entry, cruise control, 12-volt accessory socket, two-speaker multimedia system with 6.1-inch control screen, multiple connectivity including Bluetooth and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.
